Title: Arctic primary production in a rapidly changing ice-covered ocean

Abstract: This webinar will explore how Arctic primary production is evolving in a rapidly changing ocean, driven by sea-ice retreat, shifting light regimes, and new periods of ecological opportunity. Drawing on recent observations, autonomous platforms, and satellite studies conducted in the Arctic Ocean (including the Lasting Ice Area), the talk will highlight emerging mechanisms governing phytoplankton dynamics and their implications for carbon cycling and Arctic ecosystems.

Mathieu Ardyna is a research scientist in Arctic oceanography at the Takuvik Joint International Laboratory (CNRS–Université Laval–Sorbonne Université). His work focuses on under-ice light, primary production, seasonal transitions, and the responses of phytoplankton communities to rapid environmental change. He combines satellite observations, polar expeditions, and autonomous technologies to investigate biogeochemical dynamics and climate feedbacks.
