The Project EDUCATE

The project EDUCATE "Education about Climate Change and Polar Sciences" is carried out under the coordination of our TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute within the MSCA European Researchers' Night 2022 call. The project events were held in Istanbul and Gaziantep between 30 September and 1 October 2022.

In the activities carried out, it was aimed to increase the awareness of the polar regions and global climate change throughout the society by explaining the effects and benefits of polar research on our daily life, and to introduce the relevant research and researchers to the public.

Within the scope of the activities organized in partnership with Ankara University, Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education, Istanbul Technical University, Tuzla Municipality and Yaşar University, polar sciences were explained to people from all age groups. Various science workshops, exhibitions, competitions, documentary screenings and concerts were held to this aim. A comprehensive awareness was raised with the presentations of researchers who conducted field work in the polar regions.

High levels officials including governors, mayors, and rectors participated in the events. A live connection was established between İstanbul and Gaziantep during the concert events. After the speeches emphasizing the importance of the night, both national and international interaction was ensured with the video messages of other Researchers' Night projects that simultaneously took place all over Europe in the following hours.

The evening of the first day was completed with concerts in Istanbul and Gaziantep. In the late hours of the night, music performances in Istanbul and the night observation event with telescopes in Gaziantep continued until 00.30 AM. Students of various ages from the surrounding provinces and districts also participated in the all-day activities. According to the records, a total of 50,000 participants were reached in Gaziantep and Istanbul.
